Why should quotient be 1 always?
Is there a way to find answer without trying so many combinations?

Because \(r = ab - (ba * q)\), and we want to maximize \(r\).

If \(q = 1\), then \(r = ab - ba\), which is just their difference.

So to get the largest possible \(r\), we want the smallest possible \(q\), which is 1.

You can check alternative solutions here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/r-is-the-rem ... 02597.html

The question very clearly defines those:

If \(r\) is the remainder when \(ab\) is divided by \(ba\), where \(ab\) and \(ba\) are positive two-digit integers with \(a > b\), what is the maximum possible value of \(r\)?
