Total members = 1000
Men = 600 (3/5th of 1000)
Women = 400

Given that,

ME = Total W = 400....(1)
MD = 600-400 = 200

Also given that ,
ME /Total W = MD/WD
From (1), Total W = ME
So, MD = WD ....(2)

So we can get, WE = 400-200 = 200

Thus, Total Engineers = 400+200 =600

Completly agree with this, the framing of the question suggests that there are 3 categories.

Experts - Bunuel, GMATNinja, could you please suggest how to approach such questions? How do we identify this meaning gap!

Thanks for the solution!

However my interpretation of the question was that there are three categories:
People who are doctors
People who are engineers
People who are doctors as well as engineers at the same time (this option excludes the ones who are counted as only doctors or only engineers)

Experts - Bunuel, GMATNinja, could you please suggest how to approach such questions? How do we identify this meaning gap!
