A truck driver took 3 hours to travel a distance of 150 miles from the warehouse to a customer. At what average speed, in miles per hour, must the truck driver travel on the 150-mile return trip to have an average speed of 60 miles per hour for the entire round-trip?

A. 75
B. 70
C. 65
D. 60
E. 50

As the distance is covered is same, we can represent the average speed, S

\(S = \frac{2S_1 * S_2}{S_1 + S_2}\)

\(S_1\) ⇒ Speed at which the truck driver drives during its onward onward journey

\(S_1 = \frac{150}{3} = 50\)

\(S_2\) ⇒ Speed at which the truck driver drives during its return onward journey

\(60 = \frac{2*50*S_2 }{ 50 + S_2}\)

\((60 * 50) = 2*50*S_2\)

\((60 * 50) + 60S2 = 2*50*S_2\)

\(S_2 = \frac{(60*50)}{(40) }= 75\)

Option A

(Total distance) / (Total time) = (Average speed)

(300) / (3+x) = 60
300 = 180 + 60x
120 = 60x
2 = x

Basically, the return journey should be two hours. Since the distance covered on the return journey was 150 miles, the average per hour would be 75mph.

(A) is you answer.

30 seconds solution

60miles per hour means total 300 km in 5 hours, we are given 3 hours over so return 150 miles in 2 hours = 75 (Option A)
