bb , Bunuel MartyMurray, In the question it was said that total selling price is 1800$. The commission was earned on the s.p of each printer and not on the total S.P.  Kindly check the highlghted portion and the solution provided. It seems you calculated on the total s.p wherein the question asked to calculate it on each printer's s.p.  Thank you in advance ,
Bunuel

The monthly commission earned by a salesperson is x percent of the selling price of each printer sold plus an additional $20 for each of the first 10 printers sold and $30 for each printer sold thereafter. If the salesperson earned a commission of $305 by selling 12 printers last month for a total selling price of $1,800, what was the value of x?

A. 1.0
B. 1.5
C. 2.0
D. 2.5
E. 3.0
The salesperson earned:

x% of $1,800, hence $1,800*x/100

  • $20 for each of the first 10 printers sold, hence $20*10 = $200
  • $30 for each printer sold thereafter, hence $30*(12 - 10) = $60

Hence, $1,800*x/100 + $200 + $60 = $305:

$1,800*x/100 = $45

x = 45/18

x = 2.5

Answer: D
You are missing a point. We are given that "The monthly commission earned by a salesperson is x percent of the selling price of each printer sold", which implies that the salesperson gets x% of (number of printers sold)(price of a printer), which in turn equals the total selling price.

Why do we have to consider "total number of items" instead of taking only each item's price into consideration?

Let me ask you: you sell 12 printers, each for $150, for a total of $1,800. You get x percent of the selling price of each printer sold. How much would you get? Wouldn't it be (x/100) * 150 * 12 = x/100 * 1,800?

Thank you Bunuel for clearing my doubts patiently.
Actually the question said that x percent of s.p of each printer. Hence I considered the individual price ( S.P of each printer ).
I think it would have been clearer , if it said " x percent of the total selling price of each printer sold. "
Thank you once again , Bunuel.

This is an official question. Hence, the phrase "x percent of the selling price of each printer sold" is extremely precise and does not need an improvement of any sort.
