Hi Kavicogsci,

It's the second one. By "the more  dependable  a machine is" they mean "the more  reliable  a machine is" (for the first, the question would have gone with something like "the more dependent a machine is on..."). So basically,  the ~better the machine, the ~worse a human operator will be at repairing it .

Option C tells us that when machines become more reliable, operators get less practice handling malfunctions. That gives us a reason to think that they wouldn't be good at repairing these machines.

Option D when machines malfunction  less  frequently (that is, they become  more reliable ), operators pay more attention to the repair of these machines. That's the opposite of what we want.
