Hello Community!
I just gave my gmat focus and to my utter shock i scored a 665, while on my recent mocks I had consistently scored 695 and 705. I feel that the scoring in mocks and in the actual exam is very off and not really in sync. For example, in my DI section of mocks I used to make an average of 5-6 mistakes and some of these mistakes were in the question numbers 1-10. But even then the percentile never went below 80. But in my actual test I made 4 mistakes and my percentile shot down to 66.
Has someone else experienced this ? That the mistakes are way more penalising in the actual exam? Does this mean that to score high you need to make the fewest mistakes possible (Not more than 1-2), and the earlier notion that getting a high score with a lot of questions wrong (Hard ones only) is possible does not hold anymore ? Please help.
(Just to add that I scores a 100 percentile in quant but this discrepancy in DI really brought my score down, very bummed about it)
Hi cg123,

The practice tests are not exactly the same as the actual exam. Don't let this bother you too much though, and try not to focus on the number of mistakes. As for whether it's possible to get a high score with a lot of mistakes, I don't think that was ever a thing (though it depends on what we mean by "high" and "a lot"). :)

Are you thinking about taking the test again?

A score within 30 points of the mock scores is to be expected. So I would say that 665 is at the lower edge but still within range if your mock scores were 695 - 705. The scoring on DI is fairly forgiving from what I have seen. You likely messed up some very easy questions to get such a huge penalty. Keep in mind that time management is very important. You must have some time to evaluate every question fully. Guess on a question only after you see that it is quite complicated. Randomly guessing (on an easy question) can be quite harzardous to the score.
Thanks for replying ma'am, much appreciated. Now that I think of it, I feel I did panic in the DI section. I plan to give the exam again. But I feel very lost about how to better my DI score. I think my quant concepts are at par because I did score a 100 percentile in quant, but you're the expert - what do you suggest I should do to improve DI. There aren't any concepts as such, but how to imbibe a sense of ease with this section to manage time well ? What should my study plan be like - any insights and suggestions would really help :(

Yes, I plan to give it again, hopefully within a month and a half. But tbh Im really lost about how to improve DI in particular. I dont think any course would teach me new concepts, so should I just simply practice more ? What do you think ?

It's good that you're planning to take it again. You already have a very good score, so the next attempt should be easier.

I won't comment on the quant questions, but the "verbal" questions in DI seem to be quite similar to CR, so I'd say you're right (no new concepts to be learnt).

All the best. :)

I have seen several debriefs where people have gone up 80 to 100 points by not really doing anything except retaking the test.

It’s not common however but there is a margin of error and if you under perform and over perform, you can get quite a bit of a difference in scores, but usually the difference is limited to about 40 or 50 points max.

I just gave my GMAT and ended up leaving 3 questions unanswered on the DI section DI72, rest I was able to score a V82, Q88. I am really lost as to how to attack this situation and get out of this spiral. I scored a 745 and 715 on my official practice mocks and scoring a 615 was something that was out of my mind. I don't really know what to do here
