Conclusion is: regulating school cafeteria offerings would not significantly impact overall teenage snack consumption.
Option A: Teenagers are more likely to consume unhealthy snacks at home if they perceive a lack of desirable options at school.

According to the option, if school cafeteria offerings are regulated, teenagers are likely to consume unhealthy snacks at home. This can imply that teenagers who did not have unhealthy snacks at school might start having them at home just because of the perception of lack of desirable options.
This could imply that overall teenage snack consumption would increase.

Hi amoeba99, you have picked A) which is the opposite of what we need. A strengthens the conclusion that regulating snacks is FUTILE. We need to refute that statement and say that is NOT FUTILE.

5monthGMAT700a - note that this is the wrong answer. You may want to pay more attention to the prompt as you also fell for the same trap.

A) says is that if you don’t have unhealthy snacks in the cafeteria, students will just find them at home, a statement that agrees with the conclusion that regulating snacks at school is futile.... but that's not our answer. The answer we are looking for is to question the conclusion (not to support it) thus this answer choice is exactly opposite of what we are looking for. Eliminate.

P.S. A) explains the paradox but that's not the question that's asked here. We need to weaken the conclusion.

But the conclusion is
"Thus, regulating school cafeteria offerings would not significantly impact overall teenage snack consumption."
and not
"Regulating school cafeteria offerings is futile."

By A, we are showing that there could be an increase in consumption of unhealthy snacks at home which implies overall increase in teenage snack consumption. Hence conclusion is still held, by impacting overall teenage snack consumption (in a negative way by increasing it).

C is probably a stronger option, but A is not a weakener - just a less correct option?
