Hi bb, yes sure, here's the question I was referring to :
https://gmatclub.com/forum/if-n-is-a-ne ... 20404.html

bb
Hi. That’s a very good question and one I’ve been trying to get some answers to as well.

Can you post a link to the question that you got wrong? I’m just curious...

PS. Hi very much like your logic however that if this is indeed one of the hard questions why is the penalty so significant..,

Hi yes I did correct qn 18 from incorrect to correct
The qn I got wrong occurred before this (qn 15).
Also please don't tell me there's a penalty for changing answers,I don't see the point of having the option to edit upto 3 answers then :/

I took the official practice test #4 and got a score of 86 (92nd percentile), but I only made ONE mistake. The question that I got wrong is rated as 75% hard / 705-805 level on gmatclub. So shouldn't the penalty for getting just 1 qn wrong, that too one that is difficult, be less?
Why did getting one wrong result in a 4 point decrease in my Quant score?

Experts any insights will be much appreciated :) bb @bunnel KarishmaB

TtTt1212

Quick question - Did you use the edit feature to change any of the questions and updated an incorrect response to correct?

I personally don't believe either that there is a penalty for changing answers. I agree that it would be silly BUT - the truth is also that we do not know and what I believe may be worth a whole lot.

PS. I have been working on a project with GMAT Ninja to try to get GMAC to explain some of these strange behaviors. I will add this to the list of items to share and send out. This is definitely a good question to ask. I am hoping we can get an answer in a few weeks - fingers crossed.

Not a quant expert, but 1 mistake/-4 points is harsh. The old GMAT had more questions and it had DS, so something like this (1 mistake Q50) was very rare, at least as far as I know. On the new GMAT, however, it may be more common.

Given that you seem to be very good at quant, I'd advise you not to worry about this. You're most likely going to do really well on the actual test.

Agree, with a small caveat:

You will do really well, unless you make one careless mistake 😬

Fixed (it's the real GMAT, not a mock :)).

Exactly! That was a careless mistake on my part.

I wish I had an answer to that. Perhaps bb will be able to find it for all of us. But the actual GMAT test is somewhat better than this (from our limited experience with this format). There are unpredictable scores but people good at Quant almost always do well on the actual GMAT.

Hi bb, AjiteshArun , GMATNinja, KarishmaB gmatphobia
This happened again, for another official GMAT FE Mock in Quant. I got just 1 question wrong and my score is Q85 -> 89th percentile. Perhaps bb you could add this screenshot to the list of questions for GMAC :)
Although this time I did make a mistake in a 555-605 level question so I understand that the penalty is higher, but does it really warrant a 5 point drop and 11 percentile drop? :/ I am now pretty worried if the actual exam behaves this way for my account
Also, this time I didn't go back and edit any questions.

Hi TtTt1212,

One reason people on this thread are saying that the actual GMAT would probably be better is that it most likely has a bigger pool of questions (fun fact: it also has multiple pools). So it's less likely that the real test will give you a much simpler question if you've been doing well over many questions.

That said, the actual GMAT also has experimental questions, so it's possible that if you make one mistake (or maybe even two), you could get a Q90 on the actual test. :)
