mdhotstepper Congratulations on making the cut! This is a fantastic achievement for many reasons, but most importantly, in my opinion, because it comes at an opportune time as you transition from the government sector in your 30s. Make the most of this opportunity.
If you have some time before you begin, focus on brushing up on finance fundamentals—basic finance, economics, and accounting—so you can quickly get up to speed. This will be useful if you haven't had prior experience in these areas. Beyond that, prioritize networking by engaging with your peers, seniors, and potential recruiters. Networking is not only the most important aspect of an MBA but also the most interesting. The better you get at it, the greater your career opportunities will be.
As for whether consulting is a good option, that would depend on the nature of your work, which you haven’t shared, so I can’t comment on it just yet. But of course, if it piques your interest, it’s worth keeping as an option!
On the last point, do not overthink, just keep an open mind, stay curious and go with the flow. You will always find your way. Enjoy the experience

Best wishes

I've been fortunate to get an R3 admit to the upcoming IIMA PGPX (1 year MBA) prog starting in April 25. Coming from a diverse background I am excited but nervous at the opportunity. Many questions go through my mind which I keep exploring but certain major ones are as follows:- How do I go about the program preparation? What should I be doing now onwards till I report there?
- How do I go about the program. What do I focus on during the course? Academics, Networking, Knowledge of corporate?
- I really like the concept of management consulting, I feel with my current of work ex, I have the most overlap with consulting as a profession. Is this a pragmatic goal to get in good consulting firm?
- What are the questions I am not asking, or the things I am not thinking? How do I mentally prep for my life here onwards?
A lot of you would have already undergone this crazy 1 year MBA journey (IIMs, ISB, XLRI and others). I seek your guidance as in the hindsight we always think there is something we could've done better.
Do not worry I will surely enjoy my time there just looking to maximize value of the time I will spend there. In the end the supreme currency in the life we have is TIME!! Stage is all yours...
