Hello GMAT Club Community,

I have been prepping for GMAT for about 4 months now. I wrote a mock today (set 3). I had taken mocks before, but they were from Set 1 and Set 2, so thought of taking an entirely new mock with different question set to get a fair idea of my preparation.

I got a score of 575 - Very disappointed!! My previous mock score was 675. [From Set 1 - taken the third time on 27th Jan 2025. I do not recollect seeing any repeat questions in the third attempt, barring 1 question in DI section.] So my score dropped by 100 points between last attempt and this one. :(

My analysis - Quant - found questions to be tougher, made some silly mistakes. Out of the 7 questions I got wrong, 6 were silly mistakes. Felt time pressure.

Verbal - Immense time pressure, need help and guidance here on how to manage time better. Couldn't finish the section. Last 2 questions left unanswered.

DI - Again, I felt time pressure.. and found Questions to be tougher.

Here are the screen shots of my mock. Order of attempting sections in the mock - Quant, Verbal, DI

QUANT

VERBAL

DI

Would request, experts bb Bunuel GMATNinja KarishmaB to please take a look and share your valuable recommendations.

My target score is 705+ and I feel totally lost.

Thanks!

Time pressure in Quant indicates conceptual gaps. Typically most learners who understand the topics and their inter-linking well, do not need to calculate much on any Quant questions. So they typically have time remaining in the section. The thing to note is that concepts do not mean definitions and formulae. It is a lot broader than that. I am pasting links here from my YT channel. These discuss the first section of each of these topics that are tested on GMAT Quant. Do you understand these fully?

For verbal, there are two guidelines that help increase speed - visualization and structural analysis. I have talked about these as well in a video. I will drop the links to that too. For CR, de-constructing the argument is essential. Most time should be spent there. After that, we can just run through the options without wasting time on distractions.

DI, yes, takes a fair bit of effort to speed up and we are getting some challenging DS questions so there isn't a question type we can bank upon to help us save time. The point to realize here is that though the data given seems vast and complicated, the questions based on it are usually straight forward. Also, we aren't expected to do many calculations here. Estimation and eyeballing work very well for almost all questions. Though all sections test your reasoning skills, this is the section in which it is most apparent. I will leave some links on how to avoid calculations too.

Thank you KarishmaB for your taking time to go through my post and sharing your analysis. Yes, I do think that my Quant concepts are good, but I did make a bunch of silly errors, owing to the time pressure.

I will go through all the links, to ensure that there are no conceptual gaps in Quant.

Really appreciate all your help!

Here is the issue - we make careless mistakes when we are under time pressure. The moment you take that away, your careless mistakes go away too. These are some steps that help keep careless mistakes at bay, but you need to have sufficient time. So it all comes back to strong concepts!

Some ways of reducing careless errors:
  1. Double check that you used the correct data given.
  2. Double check that you answered what was asked.
  3. Check if you addressed the whole number line <= -1, -1 to 0, 0 to 1 and >=1
  4. Check if the answer makes sense in real life. GMAT is unlikely to set the cost of a newspaper as $1000.
  5. See if the answer makes sense by estimating. It is important to acquire the art of approximation: https://youtu.be/4Wy7BrQrjkM
  6. In equations and inequalities, ensure you have the correct range by putting in some values back into the given inequality.
  7. Try to do mental calculations to double check at every step e.g. if you must find 6 times 124, it must be greater than 600, in fact greater than 700. Check the last digit is what is expected i.e. 6*4 = _ 4
  8. Take note of units. Are they consistent?

Considering you are having issues with silly mistakes, here is some advice you can follow to fix those issues.

Avoiding those common pitfalls during GMAT practice requires a combination of thorough preparation and careful test-taking strategies. First, ensure you're deeply familiar with the types of questions and common traps set by the exam, which can often help you anticipate and recognize key constraints. Developing a consistent strategy for tackling each question type can also be beneficial. For instance, always read the question twice before solving it, and underline or note key words and constraints to avoid misinterpretation.

For calculation errors, practice with an error log where you record and review your mistakes to identify patterns or frequent errors. This method not only helps in correcting repeated mistakes but also sharpens your attention to detail. Additionally, during practice tests, simulate the actual test environment to build stamina and adapt to the time constraints, which can help mitigate oversight due to pressure. Lastly, it’s essential to stay calm and composed during the test, as anxiety can lead to careless errors. Techniques such as deep breathing or brief meditation before the test can aid in maintaining focus and clarity.
