It took me 6 attempts to crack GMAT with a 750!
The journey was incredible specially after you cope up with your fears, and have a belief that you can do it.
The 6 attempts include 2 GMAT Classic and 4 GMAT Focus attempts
Being an engineer from a premier institute, I never struggled with Quants. In fact, I never practiced Quants, literally no single question besides those in Mocks.
I wanna take you through my journey of each and every attempt -
Attempt 1 (18 Oct 2023) - Poor preparation, Poor Strategy.
Score = 650I didn't score great in mocks but I had made some plans for a family trip in last week of October, hence wanted to get done with my GMAT. Didn't prepare much in the mean time. Attempted English and then Maths.
Was doing super well in English - 90% accuracy till 18q of 36q. But then panicked somehow thinking that I have a time crunch.
Remember, with enough practice, I wouldn't have panicked because there was actually enough time.
Attempt 2 (28 Nov 2023) - Vacation done, better prepared.
Score = 710I wasn't very happy with this score too since somewhere I wanted to outshine my last attempt and didn't want to maximize my score.
Went on another vacation, and thought of taking another attempt before applying for a BschoolAttempt 3 (21 Jan 2024) - GMAT Classic Scrapped. Thought I would do well in Data Insights. And bombed it.
Score = 645 (~700)I was dejected seeing this since there was a dip. But I knew I couldn't prepare well for this section since I was preparing for my application. And DI was indeed TOUGH!
I applied to the Bschool with my # Attempt 2. Got interviewed in R3 but ultimately got rejected.
Attempt 4 (19 Jun 2024) - I studied probably the most for this attempt (30-40 days). I cried seeing the result.
Score = 645 (~700)
Quant = 87/90
DI = 81/90 ( 4 wrongs)
English = 77/90 (10 wrongs!!)
I never knew that even RCs could go so wrong. I was probably
JINXING MYSELF that I would flunk in any one section and I did f** it up in English. 7 wrongs in 12 RC questions.
I was so devastated that I felt like quitting this race. Because this time I knew it wasn't the preparation issue.
Something was lacking and I didn't know what...
So, I decided to give the next attempt very casually. By this time, I made a switch to startup where my work-life balance took a toll.
Attempt 5 (20 Aug 2024) - 0 preparation, and so was the result.
Score = 595 (~650s)At this time I knew that PREPARATION is the most essential thing while giving the test. You can't just casually give the exam so that you don't feel pressurised to perform.
Maxed out on the number of attempts in a year. So now was the time to channelise all my learnings into the next attempt.
Time passed by and I slowly picked up. This time I just worked on my weakness - DI and English RC.
I would like to take this moment to express my sincere gratitude to GMATCLUB for creating this awesome platform to keep my preparation targetted.
Attempt 6 (11 Nov 2024) - Wanted to nail every section and I did it!!
Score = 695 (~750)
Finally the countless ted talks that I gave to myself on my Apple Notes, Google notes and Notebook worked to bring the best of me.
I knew that day that probably I could have done even better, but who cares, this was much much needed!
This journey gave me lessons of life - To never quit until you win. Have patience and do what's in your hands = Preparation. Some amount of luck definitely plays a role too. But if you want to get something, it's perfect to wait for the right moment.
Thanks!!
