Professor: Many introductory undergraduate science courses are intended to be "proving grounds," that is, they are designed to be so demanding that only those students most committed to being science majors will receive passing grades in these courses. However, studies show that some of the students in these very demanding introductory courses who are least enthusiastic about science receive passing grades in these courses. Hence, designing introductory science courses to serve as proving grounds has not served its intended purpose.

Which one of the following is an assumption that the professor's argument requires?

(A) If some of the students who are most enthusiastic about science do not receive passing grades in introductory science courses, then designing these courses to serve as proving grounds has been unsuccessful.
(B) Science departments need a way to ensure that only those students most committed to being science majors will receive passing grades in introductory science courses.

Premises:
Many UG science courses are proving grounds - so demanding that only students most committed to being science majors will receive passing grades.
However, studies show that some of the students who are least enthusiastic about science receive passing grades in these courses.

Conclusion: Hence, designing introductory science courses to serve as proving grounds has not served its intended purpose.

The author is saying that the courses are designed so that only those most committed to being science majors will pass. But some non enthusiastic about science also pass. So the course is ineffective.
But here is an interesting point - where is it given that "non enthusiastic for science" people cannot be committed to being science majors? These are 2 different aspects we are discussing.
What if these people who pass but are not enthusiastic about science still, for whatever reason, are committed to being science majors (perhaps peer pressure, parental expectations, no interest in any offered subject but science is most intuitive or any other reason)?
So the course could still be effective in filtering only those who are committed to being science majors.

Hence to claim that the courses have not served their purpose, the author is assuming that if a student is not enthusiastic about science, then he is not committed to being a science major.

That's why (D) works.

(D) None of the students in the very demanding introductory science courses who are least enthusiastic about science are among the students most committed to being science majors.
