The average of 3 is 25$ , so the total spending is 75$. We only have 8% sales tax for items costing 40 or more.
Option 1: costliest item 50$ -> tax 8% of 50 is 4.
The cost of the other two items is 75-50=25 . Hence none of them can cross 40$ .So no tax on them. Hence from option 1 we get 8$ tax . (sufficient)

Option 2: least cost is 5$, so remaining cost is 70$. Now the price of the other two items can be of any combination which gives different tax.Hence no conclusive of the exact tax. So not sufficient. So option A should be the answer

The arithmetic average cost of the three items that Emma purchased from a grocery store is $25. No sales tax was charged on any item that cost less than $40. A sales tax of 8 percent was charged on any item that cost $40 or more. What is the sales tax on the three items that Emma purchased?

(1) The most costly item that Emma purchased was $50.
(2) The least costly item that Emma purchased was $5.
