The graph shows the percent change in the price, in U.S. dollars, of each of two cryptocurrency coins—Throecoin and Hyrlcoin—from noon Fernando de Noronha Time (FNT) the previous day to noon FNT on the day marked, for dates in 2025. For instance, the price of Throecoin in U.S. dollars was 25 percent higher at noon FNT on Sunday, January 13, 2025, than it was at noon FNT on Saturday, January 12, 2025.
Select from each drop-down menu the option that creates the most accurate statement based on the information provided.
Of the dates from Monday, January 7, 2025, to Monday, January 14, 2025, the price of Throecoin at noon FNST was highest on . If the price of Hyrlcoin was the same at noon FNT on Tuesday, January 15, 2025, as it was at noon FNT on Monday, January 7, 2025, and the graph were extended to include Tuesday, January 15, 2025, then the percent change shown for Hyrlcoin or the graph for Tuesday, January 15, 2025, would be closest to percent.

The first part of the question asks us to identify the date on which the noon FNT price of Throecoin (the lighter gray, left-hand bars) was highest. This task can be greatly simplified by the realization that this price was LOWER on each of January 8th, 9th, and 10th than on the previous day, and then HIGHER on each of January 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th than on the previous day (all dates at noon FNT). Accordingly, the HIGHEST noon FNT Throecoin price in the date range from January 7th to January 14th must have come either on the 7th, before the initial series of decreases, or else on the 14th, after those decreases and the subsequent increases. So, it suffices to find the noon FNT price of Throecoin on January 14th as a multiple of that on January 7th; whichever of those is higher is the highest price in this date range.
If the price of Throecoin at noon FNT on January 7, 2025, was x dollars, then—using each of the percentage changes on the graph in succession (with the on-screen calculator!!)—Throecoin’s price at noon FNT on January 14, 2025, was
x(0.8)(0.6)(0.75)(1.2)(1.4)(1.25)(1.3) = 0.9828x,
meaning that the price was slightly lower on January 14th than on January 7th. The highest noon FNT price for Throecoin over this date range thus came on Monday, January 7, 2025.
Noon FNT on Monday, January 7, 2025, represents the exact start time of the changes in this graph. As in the previous part of this problem, applying all of the percent changes shown in the graph by sequential multiplication will give the price at noon FNT on Monday, January 14, 2025, as a multiple of that price. If the price of Hyrlcoin at noon FNT on January 7, 2025, was y dollars, then—using each of the percentage changes on the graph in succession (with the on-screen calculator!!)—Hyrlcoin’s price at noon FNT on January 14, 2025, was
y(0.4)(0.6)(0.8)(1)(1.2)(1.4)(1.6) ≈ 0.5161y,
which is quite close to 0.5y, or half the price from January 7, 2025.
In the latter part of the problem, this price needs to return to the value y over the following 24 hours (up to noon FNT on January 15, 2025—the day to be hypothetically added to the graph). Since the price at noon FNT on January 14, 2025, is approximately half of y, this will require an approximate doubling—in other words, an increase of approximately 100 percent—in the price of Hyrlcoin over those 24 hours.
It's an approximation game while keeping in mind that the percentage change is w.r.t to its previous day's price. Let's solve for Throecoin first and assume Mon,Jan7 value of it to be $100
Accordingly, we can get Mon, Jan 7 : $100 Tues, Jan 8 : 100x(0.8) = $80 Wed, Jan 9 : 80x(0.6) = $48 Thu, Jan 10 : 48x(0.75) = $36 Fri, Jan 11 : 36x(1.2) = $43 Sat, Jan 12 : 43x(1.4) = $60 Sun, Jan 13 : 60x(1.25) = $75 Mon, Jan 14 : 75x(1.3) = $97 (approx.)
As we can see, the greatest value is at Mon, Jan 7 only.
Moving on to Hyrlcoin. Let's assume the value Hyrlcoin on Mon, Jan 7 to be $100 Then, 100x(0.4)x(0.6)x(0.8)x(1)x(1.2)x(1.4)x(1.6) = $50 (approx.)
From $50 to get $100, we need to increase it by (100-50)/50x100 = 100%

Nice solution, although this problem is emphatically not an "approximation game". It's crucial that you carry the EXACT values through the calculations (using the on-screen calculator that you're provided for Data Insights!).
In the first part of the problem, after seven consecutive percentage changes, you end up with a final value (on the 14th) that's just two or three percent less than what you started with (on the 7th). "Approximating" ANYTHING along the way could easily end up inverting the order of these two values, costing you the entire problem.
