Let the pre-tax price be B.

Let the sales tax amount in the second state be t. Then the sales tax amount in the first state is 4t, because the tax rate is four times as large.

So:

B+t=795

B+4t=930

Subtract the equations:

3t=135

t=45.

Therefore, B=795-45=750.


With a 15% sales tax, the sofa would cost 750(1.15)=862.50.
