The answer choices indicate this is a GMAT-style linear-combination problem.
Let:
0.4T + 1.5M + 2S = 28.5 ...(1)
0.6T + 2M + 1.5S = 35 ...(2)
Need:
0.8T + 2.5M + S
Notice:
Target = 2×(1) − (2)
because
2×(1) = 0.8T + 3M + 4S
Subtract (2):
= 0.2T + M + 2.5S
So that doesn't give the target directly.
Instead, add the two given equations:
(0.4+0.6)T + (1.5+2)M + (2+1.5)S
= T + 3.5M + 3.5S
= 28.5 + 35
= 63.5
Now compare this with the target:
0.8T + 2.5M + S
Difference:
(T + 3.5M + 3.5S) − (0.8T + 2.5M + S)
= 0.2T + M + 2.5S
But
2×(1) − (2)
= 0.2T + M + 2.5S
= 57 − 35
= 22
Therefore,
Target = 63.5 − 22
= 41.5
Answer: C. $41.50

- (M) = cost per kg of mussels
- (S) = cost per kg of squid
