I thought I'd share my journey because reading GMAT Club debriefs helped me a lot during my preparation. GMAT Club helped me immensely during the preparation!!
I took the GMAT Focus after preparing for about 4 months while working full-time and ended up with a 715 (99th percentile) — Q88 (96th), V85 (94th), DI84 (97th).
The journey wasn't smooth at all. My diagnostic score was 495, and I was weak in all three sections. Quant wasn't great, I struggled with RC accuracy, made too many silly mistakes, and DI was my biggest headache because I kept running out of time.
Initially, I relied on free YouTube videos, but I soon realized they weren't enough for me. I eventually joined a coaching (not one of the expensive mainstream ones) mainly for structured lectures. More than the coaching, one of my college seniors guided me throughout the process. Having someone tell me what to study and what to ignore saved me a lot of time.
The toughest phase was when my mock scores got stuck around 625–635. No matter what I did, they just wouldn't improve. Looking back, the biggest mistake was focusing on solving more questions instead of understanding why I was making the same mistakes repeatedly. I feel direction of study matters in priority to the actual effort you put during study.
I took 14 mocks in total, and honestly, reviewing them was far more valuable than taking them. Every mock taught me something about my timing, accuracy, or decision-making.
Since I was working, I studied for about 2 hours before/after work and 7–8 hours on weekends. It wasn't about studying crazy hours—it was about being consistent.
The biggest lesson I learned is that your diagnostic score doesn't define your final score. A structured plan, consistent effort, and thorough mock analysis matter much more than constantly switching resources. There were a lot of phases of demotivation/work stress/miscellaneous tasks in between where I feel in the hindsight I could have avoided a lot of time on.
Also - converted ISB and IIM A (Indian colleges). Thinking to apply in the US as well.
PS: had started a small pro bono mentorship thing as my way of giving back to the awesome GMAT Club community. Would be happy to have a discussion with you and suggest a way ahead. Feel free to shoot any questions

Congratulations on achieving an awesome jump from 495 to 715. This shows your discipline and consistency in showing up even when you are not motivated. I wish you all the best for your future endeavors.
