In a modified version of Russian Roulette, 13 people participated. The rules were such that alternate people survived and progressed to the next round, along with 3 new wild-card entrants. Were 8 people participating at the beginning of the 3rd round?
(1) The first person survived at the end of the first round
(2) The sixth person did not survive at the end of the first round

So there are two possible patterns:
Pattern A: people 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 survive → 7 survivors,7 + 3 = 10 people at beginning of Round 2
Pattern B: people 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 survive → 6 survivors,5 + 3 = 8 people at beginning of Round 3
Then 3 new wild-card entrants join for the next round.

Why is answer not A?
From the second statement we get 6 people survive from round 1. So at start of round 2 there are total 6+3=9. Now there can be two patterns here either 4 or 5 people survive at the end of round 2. So at the start of round three there will be either 7 or 8 people.
So the second statement becomes insufficient?
