This question flips the order of silver and gold twice. This is atypical of GMAT questions.

This is a Data Sufficiency question. We need to determine whether the given information is enough to answer:
Quote:
Can Mr. Aubrey make at least 100 pendants using 150 oz gold and 450 oz silver?
Given
  • Gold = 150 troy oz
  • Silver = 450 troy oz

Statement (1)
Quote:
Each silver pendant requires 4.5 oz silver and 0.5 oz gold.
For 100 silver pendants:
Silver required:
100(4.5)=450 oz100(4.5)=450\text{ oz}
Gold required:
100(0.5)=50 oz100(0.5)=50\text{ oz}
He has:
  • Silver = 450 oz ✅
  • Gold = 150 oz ✅
So he can definitely make 100 silver pendants.
Therefore, Statement 1 alone is sufficient.

Statement (2)
Quote:
Each gold pendant requires 4.5 oz gold.
He has 150 oz of gold.
Number of gold pendants:
1504.5=33.33\frac{150}{4.5}=33.33
So he can make only 33 complete gold pendants, not 100.
But here's the important point: we don't know how much material a silver pendant requires.
He has 450 oz of silver, but without knowing the silver pendant's requirements, we cannot determine whether he can make 100 silver pendants.
Therefore, Statement 2 alone is NOT sufficient.

Final Answer: A — Statement (1) alone is sufficient.
StatementSufficient?Why?
1✅ YesCan make exactly 100 silver pendants
2❌ NoCan make only 33 gold pendants, but silver pendant requirements are unknown
A\boxed{\text{A}}
🔑 Important Data Sufficiency trick
Don't ask "Can I calculate something?"
Ask:
Quote:
"Can I answer the YES/NO question with certainty?"
For Statement 2, knowing he can make only 33 gold pendants doesn't tell us whether he can make 100 silver pendants, so it isn't sufficient.
