Packing a suit for the interview?

Question

it might sound silly, but how are people who are traveling to interview dealing with it? Just pack it and hope it stays presentable ? perhaps wear it on the flight ? or pack it a certain way? I reach Chicago late in the evening and have an early morning slot, so i don't have much margin for error. any ideas?

Depending on the aircraft, there should be a spot in front to hang garment bags.

I have a garment bag that I lug around and spread it out in the overhead compartment if possible. It usually does a pretty decent job. Also- as soon as you reach your hotel- just remove the suit and let it "hang".

Hang it in the shower (where it won't get wet) and turn the water on hot. Close the door to the bathroom and give it 10-15 minutes. Works like a charm.

I always make sure to not make a "hard" fold in it. For instance I will lay it in the bottom of the suitcase/travel bag and then pack clothes on top, then fold the top of the suit over so if I were to take a cross section of the bag, the suit would be in a C fashion. With clothes making up in the interior of the C. It has worked for me pretty well...

That's a new one. Gotta give it a try sometime! I got a small, portable steamer-iron as a gift. I am scared to use it on a suit though, need to first try it out on some old shirts.
For overnight visits, I have a cloth garment bag which I found in Target for ~$20. Like dosa, I just fold it in the overhead bin over other luggage.

I use "Dockes Garment Bag" for business travel, takes in everything needed (2 shirts, sweaters, socks, belt, tie, shoes) and keeps couple of suits is shape too.

You can find it many stores (JCP, KOHLS etc.) for 100 bucks.

Ok to take this further - how do I effectively pack a suit for a 20 hour flight, with an overnight stopover in Tokyo ?

I do the "C" packing approach like sam77sam7 and rarely have wrinkles, even for all-day travel. Most wrinkles will come out naturally after hanging for some time. Either way, ever hear of an iron? :lol:

Just turn it on low (possibly put something like a light towel between the iron and the suit if you're paranoid) and it should be safe to use on the suit's material.

i have a suitcase which has a separate section for suits. Its big enough that you don't have to fold it, or if you do, there's only 1 fold in it. Overnight stopover in Narita...(its 70km away from Tokyo :lol:

If you are getting to the destination a couple of days earlier, just get the hotel to dry clean it. That way it will be clean and well ironed!, else I always carry mine as hand luggage .

Ask Flight attendant to hang it in the plane. Smile and massage their ego it will help. Good luck with you interview.

I do have a good mate in Tokyo who I can stay with for a night, but its just not worth going to the city, suit and all, just for one night - as much as I want to.

Wear the suit on the plane
Take the jacket off before you sit down
Lay it -flat- on top of everything in the plane  or  flirt with a flight attendtant to get it hung in the closet

I recommend accidentally bringing your tuxedo instead of your suit... makes for a great ice breaker for the interview... This happened to me last week at Darden, and it was the most genious accident I've ever made...

I picked up one of these skyroll things to go to Chicago (https://www.skyroll.com/). Their website is garbage but I was impressed with the product. It fit perfectly in the overhead, held my entire suit (can hold up to 3) and left very few wrinkles - all of which came out during the steam/shower process.
