The parachutelike membranes of Africa’s scaly-tailed flying squirrels differ from those of the flying squirrels in the family Scuridae because they are attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow instead of the wrist.

A – Same Hold it
B – because of being attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow rather than at because of being
C – in their attachment to a cartilage rod at the elbow instead of being attached at instead of being
D – in that they are attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow rather that at rather that
E – in their being attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow instead of in their being

The membranes of one squirell differ from those of another squirrel becuase they [the membranes] are attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow instead of the wrist.

I go with A.

As a side note, being is almost always wrong on the GMAT.

My first reaction was like gixxer1000.
But I rechecked the usage again, to answer this question we need to know two usage ...

"rather than" is preffer over "instead of"
"in that" is preffered over "because"

GMAT has given "being" to dogg us on A. I am terrified ......
