GMAT 700 Threshold Spreadsheet

Question

All,

I created the following spreadsheet to analyze what score combinations in Math and Verbal would I need to score 700+.

Most of the scoring combinations were taken off people's actual reported scores in these forums or from reported scores on admissions411.com. I hope you guys enjoy and please feel free to correct any squares if you achieved that score and I made a mistake on the spreadsheet. Please realize some scores could go either way due to rounding.

But sometimes the scores vary within the same splits. For instance I had a 48 40 which yielded a 720. However I know of others who had a 48 40 but only received a score of 710.

Also, I'd suggest 51,51 split would yield 800.

If this spreadsheet is accurate then here are somethings to consider for those aiming for 750:

- If you're strong at quant and regularly achieve 48-49, you should push yourself to hit 50-51 - This way you'll hit 750 with a "mere" 41 in verbal (although I hit 760 yesterday on gmat prep with a 50 41 split)

- If you're hitting 40-41 in verbals then you must try to hit 42 - 43 since Q49 V42 hits 750 (and I know of some people who have hit 760 with that split).

yeah the breakup is helpful in terms of focusing prep efforts ... I dont think I can crack 50 on the Q and hence I might have a better shot getting a 43-44 on V and keeping my Q stable at 47 or perhaps move it too 48-49 ... Now I need to start studying :roll:

There must be levels within each Q/V breakdown that pushes a score to the next one up despite having exactly the same breakdown as another yet lower score. For example, I got a 48Q and 38V and got a 710, but someone else on this forum has that same breakdown and has a 700--and the tests were taken recently.

If you look at your scoring report, both Math and Verbal scores are reported to the tenth of a point. I assume then these scores are rounded in order to give a breakout. So if you score Q47.3 and the other person scores Q46.6, then I could see how you scored 710 and the other person scored 700.

For what it's worth, I had a 49 (Math) and 44 (Verbal) split and that yielded a 750.

Also a 49 Math was 90th percentile. Of course, this was back in April so it must have changed.

Tenth of a point? Is this a new thing? I'm pretty sure my report does not have tenths of a point.

But djhouse81 is correct. i've seen 50/40 50/39 and 50/38 all get 730. I've seen 50/40 get 740. So, some of the higher/lower ends can be +/- 10 pts.

my husband got a 49Q/39V and got a 710 (94%) and says he should have got a 720 like your spreadsheet indicates

I got a 48Q/39V and got a 710 (93%)

They're noting the mean score. Your actual report doesn't have increments in tenths, it will be a whole number.

I know someone who got 750 with Q50 and V40. For same split I got 730 :evil:

The problem with the spreadsheet is that the scores are  slightly  dated. There just isn't a large enough sample of current scores. A 750 today doesn't quite carry the same weight as a 750 five years ago, whence it was the 99th%ile. It's like comparing Alex Rodriguez with Mickey Mantle -- different era, different strategy, & unfair to compare.

In the past, your score would have yielded a 740. But look at it this way, you have one of the prettiest splits 50/40.
