IMO, timing is crucial for the GMAT not only from a practical viewpoint, but especially from a psychological viewpoint. If you realize you are behind on time, you tend to "panick" and get more nervous for the remianing questions. Thus, you generally want to be on schedule or slightly ahead of schedule if possible.
