The first part of the sentence says "performing a risky maneuver". Who is permorming??? It is modifying some noun, which is a space astrounats in this case, so automatically you can get rid off choices ABC,
In option D retrieved is not parallel to the word avoiding and the simultaneously is missing proper punctutation as well. So the only correct asnwer is E, which is paralell and is uses correctly modified noun.

another vote for E

A, B & C all have a 'misplaced modifier' issue.

between D & E.

D) simultaneously while avoiding is not only awkward but also not-parallel ... with rest of the sentence
astorauts retrieved ... and simultaneously avoided

E is the best of choice.

IMO : E
misplaced modifier issue.

Correct idiom : not only x but also y

space shuttle astronauts retrieved x and avoided y.
