Two new breeds of freshwater fish will soon be introduced onto the market. The Trident Flick fish is rich in vitamins and iron, and the tastiest fish available while the fattier Lackey is abundant and caught easily, making it the cheaper of the two. In a recent survey, consumers of poultry products rated nutritional value as the most important factor influencing their decision on which product to buy. It can be deduced that the sales figures for the Trident fish will be much higher than those for the Lackey.

Which of the following is an assumption underlying the conclusion?

A. Consumers approach the decision of which fish to buy in the same way that they approach the decision of which poultry product to buy.
B. Fish is generally more expensive than poultry since it has to be caught and is not usually industrially manufactured.
C. A rise in the awareness of consumers about nutrition and proper diet has affected the sales of both poultry and fish.
D. Consumers always consider nutritional value, taste, or both as factors that are more important than price.
E. When health is an integral part of a consumer's decision, the price may play a smaller role in affecting that decision.

Why is D false?
The author draws the conclusion based on the premise that people buy poultry according to its nutritional value; therefore, he or she does not need to make a broad assumption about consumers habits in general - there is already a fact to work with. Try to find a an answer choice that connects the conclusion to all premises, not just some.

Hi,

A.

That is the only relevant option and also rightly the answer because the details pertaining to the nutriontal value is told for poultry however the same is used to derive the conclusion for fish.

Not a good question IMO. Answer could also be D, if the Nutritional value of "Lackey" is considered way higher than that of "Trident Flick" albeit less tastier than the latter. If that is the case, than the "value, taste, or both" value of "Lackey" may be higher. Since the value is not known, we can not say for sure and hence A gets a slightly higher edge over D.

Premise: In a recent survey, consumers of poultry products rated nutritional value as the most important factor influencing their decision on which product to buy

Conclusion: sales figures for the Trident fish will be much higher than those for the Lackey

Assumption: People May think the same about poultry products and fish
here we are comparing that people choose "A" because of "X" therefore they will choose B as well because of "X"

So, we are clearly left with A

Ans: A .

Though D appears as Contender, Negating D wont shatters the conclusion.

Not always People prefer nutritional value to price.

Still conclusion holds true

Not always ( 0-99) times. Still Sales could be higher for T fish than L fish.

Thanks
Raju
