Hi zoezhuyan,

If it would be easier to discuss your studies and ESR through email, then that would be fine. Send me an email me (at Rich.C@empowergmat.com) and I will email you the analysis of your ESR.

Hi zoezhuyan,

I’m sorry to hear how things went with your GMAT. Looking at your ESR and your practice test scores, you clearly are very solid in quant; however, you have to make some major improvements across all aspects of verbal to increase your GMAT score to 720+. Thus, rather than getting bogged down in the micro-details of your ESR, you really need to focus on following a thorough, structured, and gradual verbal study plan. Would you like some detailed advice on how to improve your verbal skills?

ScottTargetTestPrep, thanks for your reply.

I have practiced OG 16 many times, and feel good at OG16, i read powerscore bible CR more than 5 times, MANHATTAN guides more than 5 times.
and i remember i was totally lost what RC passages say and i rushed in SC in order to save time to RC and CR,

next, i plan
1/strengthen SC, meaning first priority
2/learn LSAT to improve my logical reasoning,
3/practice 4 RCs/day, balance effectively reading and my own pace, which may be few more min than average, but don't sacrift accrucy.

when i watch some RC videos of RON, i feel it is not so harder than previous thought, but when i practice myself, i feel it's hard, especially i rarely got the main idea, purpose, arrangment, why author writes the passage.
if i read very slowly, say 8-10min/ long passage, 4-5min/ short passage, I think i can get main idea,

any advice?

So, don’t worry about quickly reading through passages but rather focus on being a more effective reader. Remember, your goal is not necessarily to read fast but rather to read effectively, so that you understand what you’ve just read, right?

To understand what you are reading, you likely have to first slow down (and eventually speed up). You have to learn to comprehend what you read, keep it all straight, and use what you are reading to arrive at correct answers. At this point, your best bet is to focus on getting the correct answers to questions, taking as much time as you need to see key details and understand the logic of what you are reading. If you don't understand something, go back and read it one sentence at a time, even one word at a time, not moving on until you understand what you have just read. There is no way around this work. Your goal should be to take all the time you need to understand exactly what is being said and arrive at the correct answer. If you can learn to get answers taking your time, you can learn to speed up. Answering questions is like any task: The more times you o it carefully and successfully, the faster you become at doing it carefully and successfully.

Another component to understanding what you are reading is being “present” when reading. Don’t worry about how things are going at work, or what you will eat for dinner, or even how long you’re taking to read through the passage. Just focus on what is in front of you, word by word, line by line. Furthermore, try to make reading fun. For example, even if you are reading about a topic that bores you, pretend that you are the person making the argument. By doing so, you will make the passage more relatable to YOU, and ultimately you should be able to read with greater focus.

One final component of Reading Comprehension that may be tripping you up is that RC questions contain one or more trap answers that seem to answer the question but don't really. So, a key part of training to correctly answer RC questions is learning to notice the differences between trap answers and correct answers. You have to learn to see how trap danswers seem to follow from what the passages say, but don't really, while correct answers fit what the passages say exactly. Of course, the better you become at noticing the differences between trap answer choices and correct answers, the faster you will answer RC questions.

If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out.

Good luck!

Thanks ScottTargetTestPrep,

These days, i always try to find out the balance between the reading efficiency and time control. Now i think i get the answer from your reply
i should gurantee the accurancy first.
But i still worry little that if i focus on comprehension, rather than time control, will my brain be habitual reading slower and therefore it will be hard to manage time during real test?

additional, should i practice RCs randomly , or prqactice only one sort of passage and then change another sort, say, long passage for some days and then short passages for some days, or science for some days and then change other for some days?

Actually, I did expence that i totally cannot understand a passage, I feels what it says is so abstract to comprehense, I am not sure it's becaue of my interpretation or the material is too abstract to get the main point.

waiting for your reply

For now, as mentioned, just work on accuracy. Once you learn HOW to answer questions correctly, your speed will increase. Also, there is nothing wrong with randomizing the passages with which you practice. You don’t necessarily have to practice just history or just science, for example, in a particular study session.
