Thank you for the question:
The reasons A is not the best answer are several and primarily A being too broad.

1. The Passage does not frame it as a failure
2. The focus of the passage is not on the broader societal challenges - this is quite broad, instead it is more specific.
3. It misses the specific purpose it seems. the author is essentially saying, historians have focused too much on X; we need to look at Y and Z to get the full picture.

Hi bb

Could you please help me understand if my reasoning is off?

Option E's explanation is understood- The passage certainly 'challenges the overemphasis' of the Seitosha society’s 'Elite movement' (by mentioning that it A- confined to urban centers and B- catered to a narrow audience of educated women).

However, I think that the scope might be limited.

For option A-
The author is showing us how the overemphasis around that 'narrow focus' blocked out rural women's actual issues.

I also think that the lack of effort put by those 'Primary Scholars' connects well to the third para's "the relationship between feminist movements and industrialization in Japan remains underexplored."

So despite 'analyze the failure of the movement' being critically incorrect, I still chose it, since it better aligns with the primary concern of the passage i.e. How the Seitosha Society's 'Elite Movement' didn't address broader societal challenges which were A- Rural women’s actual issues (economic survival, healthcare) and B- Industrialization’s impact on family roles.

Could you please let know your thoughts? Appreciate it. Cheers

Both in paragraph 2 and 3, economic factors played the pivotal role. Please explain why option D is wrong.

kartickdey Yes, you are correct that there is an economic factor, but look at the wording of option D. It says that the primary purpose of the passage was to evaluate the economic factor's role in shaping the cultural movement. We are not judging or assessing the economic factor's role if we look at the overall factor. The economic factor was provided as a reason to challenge the scholars' focus primarily on Seitosha&rsquo. These scholars focused their study on only limited aspect, neglecting the other, i.e., economic importance to rural women.

Hope this helps.
