Merchants, though legally beneath samurai, began to sponsor kabuki theater, tea ceremonies, and elaborate festivals, where they could subtly showcase their affluence through patterned kimonos and discreet silk linings.

isn't good/distinct cloth reserved for samurai and merchants using it/showcasing it might be like taking privileges that were of samurai's( to showcase distinct clothes)?

Good point... The passage does say merchants sponsored kabuki and other cultural events to display wealth, yet it immediately adds that the shogunate tightened dress rules “so that no merchant could appear their equal.” Sponsorship let merchants show off, but it did not grant them privileges formerly reserved for samurai; in fact, the authorities acted to prevent that outcome. Because the statement claims merchants gained such privileges, which the passage contradicts (in the context of the sentence that follows), option E is the only choice not supported by the text.

For me, this question boiled down to: Choice C vs Choice E

Choice C: Economic power began to outweigh hereditary status by the mid-19th century. My problem with this choice is "began". It says that by the mid-19th century, economic power began to outweigh hereditary status.

The passage says that: By the mid-19th century, economic privilege increasingly outweighed hereditary status as a marker of influence. Increasingly outweighed means that the point of shift of balance towards hereditary status must have happened before, and the balance further shifted by the mid-19th century. Hence, I chose C).

Choice E: This also seemed correct because of the reasoning that just because the kubuki theater was sponsored, allowing merchants to display luxury, no privileges were "gained"

Either way, this is a very goo detail oriented question that is definitely not "medium".
