I'm not 100% sure on the essays, but why even risk it? Once the timer hits 20 seconds, wrap up your final thought and just submit/confirm it. Chances are that you won't make a meaningful difference to your essay in the final 5 seconds anyway...

It has been a while since you have last discussed that topic.

Could someone advice me what will happen if I do not click NEXT and CONFIRM on the last question of a section? Does GMAT count it as unanswered or as answered?

Please share some recent information.
Thanks
If you do not select any of the 5 options then obviously the last question will appear as unattempted. But, from what I have read, if you select an option and then are unable to click on 'Next' and 'Confirm' this option will automatically be marked as selected. This is why a lot of the experts suggest that once you reach the last option, in case you are running short of time, first select one option and then spend time on the question so that even if you are unable to complete the question at least it won't reflect as unattempted.

I also came across what bob75 has discussed. Still, I side with longhorn07 on this strategy. It's better to be safe than sorry. And the additional few seconds probably won't matter.
