My long X-roomie scored 780 (q51, v46) in GMAT 3 years ago.
In his GMAT, he had 20 seconds left when he reached the last question of the Quant section. His bowel suddenly had an urge to release and he farted :p, and with that embarrassment he missed marking the last question and the section timed out.
Given the above 2 premises the conclusion is you CAN still get q51 even if you do not finish the section, of-course you probably need close to 100% strike rate in other questions
We met on a lunch today, and I could not stop laughing after hearing this story from him :p. Thought I would share!

This made me laugh too, but your friend might have done very well in the rest of the exam. Otherwise, it (p:) could be a recipe to get q50, at least.

That is interesting... usually there is a 3 percentile penalty for missing a question - your friend was very lucky and must have gotten it as an experimental question or perhaps he marked the question but did not hit submit? (that still counts).
If he answered every question perfectly, he still should have gotten only 97th percentile, which is 50, not 51 per this table: gmat-scores-83890.html
So.... there are 3 explanations:
1) This was an experimental question and did not count though missing even that question should still count, so probably not.
2) He marked the question but did not hit submit (most likely)
3) 97th percentile is actually 51 but GMAC did not publish and updated table (? Possible)
