A program I'm interested in has the following statement regarding admission:

While there are not fixed thresholds, students admitted to the program generally score above the 90th percentile on both the quantitative and verbal scales (GMAT) and have GPAs from prior studies in excess of 3.5.

How can I figure out what score the 90th percentile equates to? Doesn't this change every month?

90th in quant equates to a score of 49.
90th in verbal equates to a score of 40.
However, a 90th in both quant & verbal will give you a score of ~730 = 97th percentage ranking!

The current percentage ranking table is the result of GMAT tests undertook between Jan01 and Dec03 and it became effective on the 1st October 04 for a period of one year. Hence, the pre-october test rush.

Am I right when I say we might be talking about the likes of Stanford and/or MIT here?

Actually, this is for the PhD in Finance program at Vanderbilt University.

I wonder if they worded the response wrong and meant a 90th percentile total?

I think a 90th percentile total would be more accurate. That would mean 680 GMAT

So, is 680 the current score that equates to the 90th percentile or the "old" score prior to October?

It is the new percentile as I did my test in November and I got the new breakdown sheet

The answer to your question is, NO. I do not think it has been that a drastic re-rating.

While there are not fixed thresholds, students admitted to the program generally score above the 90th percentile on both the quantitative and verbal scales.

Seems clear to me: Current PhD students and/or alumni have scored >= 730. You could always post it in the verbal/RC section for debate... :wink: :lol:

Spoke to the assistant in the PhD program office and she confirmed that the score is 680. She further indicated that an applicant would not stand a very good chance with a score lower than 640.
