Hello,
First of all, thanks for the wealth of information you all provide!!
After a lot of start-stop preparation during 2011, I decided to go ahead and book a date first (Dec 10th). As part of my study plan, I took my first GMAT Prep exam, without much prep.
I was shocked when I realized that I could not complete even 20 questions, before I ran out of time. Since I answered most of the first few questions correctly, they kept getting harder and harder, and I took my own sweet time. Also, I just could not sit through the rest of the Exam (Verbal) and my score ended up being just 440
Is this just me? Has any one had timing/stamina issues during initial phases of prep? I am expecting to spend a lot of time the next 4 weeks on Quant and overcome the timing issues first.

I never encountered stamina problem. However, I did had timing problem in the quantitative part when I started to study. The tip I can give you is the following:
1. The gmat is not checking you only for the right answer. It also checks if you can do it in a limited time. The level of a question is not only how hard it is to solve, but also - how fast you can do it.
So if you find yourself doing a question for above 2-3min it means its above your level.
2. you have to learn when and what questions you need to let go. If in the real exam you encounter a question that is too hard for you - dont waste the time of 5 other questions. Be smart, choose the best option that you can estimate as the right answer and go on.

It sounds like you're just going through normal prep phases. I tutor for the SATs and initially, students always perform at a slower pace than during the final practice test that we administer.
Once you become familiar with the material, the timing should come naturally.
