Hi everyone,
I just got back from the test center after my second take on GMAT. My score is 650 (Q47,V33). I was running short of time during my quant section because I lost track of time in the middle and spent about 4-6 minutes in 2 questions. During the last 10 questions, I only had 11 minutes left. I had no choice but to guess 2-3 questions (not in a row) in order to leave no questions unanswered. During verbal, I did the first 20 plus questions within the recommended time and I was feeling good about the section until the 3rd RC came up. Long scientific article with 4 passages that took me about 8 minutes to read and comprehend. I had to rush through a few SCs and CRs after that but I managed to answer all of the questions.
I guess I should provide more info on my prep so far.
I've started studying GMAT in 2014, went through the 10
Manhattan GMAT strategy guides. I wanted to make sure that I learn the foundations well so I did not set a test date and took my time understanding those guides, while working a full time 9 to 5 job. Also, I believed that I should not take the test until I'm ready for it (which I'm not sure if I'll ever feel ready for it). I finally decided that 1 year of prepping is too long, took my test in January 2015 and scored 570 (Q36,V32). I didn't finish the quant section and guessed some of the SCs.
I decided that I needed to work on my time management, on top of basic quant and verbal skills, so I bought 6 CATS from
MGMAT. I also bought the SC course from EGMAT and completed that as well. I've been studying 1-2 hours in the morning before work and 4-5 hours during the weekends, but again, that has not been very effective because I did not set my second test date. After 11 months of unfocused prepping, of which 2 months I've spent on a few holidays, I decided to give GMAT another try. I booked my test appointment 3 weeks before, and those 3 weeks have been more effective than the past 11 months.
It clear that I'm more motivated when I book my test date because it keeps me focused and allows me to plan my time frame properly. I'm planning to give GMAT another go in two months time.
My game plan:
- Hours of studying will be the same: 2 hours before work, 6-8 each day on the weekends
- Quant - practice on timing and sharpen my skills on my weak areas(word problems and exponents). I read that someone has been practicing 40questions in 60minutes to increase their timing. I'll try doing that without compromising my accuracy
- Verbal - a bit clueless here on how to prep for verbal now. Based on the OG questions, my accuracy on CR is 90%, RC 86% and SC 76%. I guess I'll relook into my EGMAT SC course and see how I can improve my SC. I"m not too sure on how to prep for RC, nor what else went wrong during the verbal sections of my tests.
Questions are:
1) Is 2 months enough to improve my score from 650 to 700?
2) Is my game plan good enough for quant and are there any suggestions for my verbal prep?
thank you so much for reading (I know it's a lot) and I would really appreciate any feedback or comments on how I can improve. Prepping for 2 years is way too long; I would love to finish it up with a bang and move on.
