On the GMAT, if we encounter a question that states that: "The differences of X & Y is 4" does it mean:
X-y=4
OR
Y-X=4
Or
We need to take both situation 1 & Situation 2 into account and solve for X &Y
I'm asking because some study guides tell us that we need to assume scenario 1, but I find it odd.

Hi kanav06,
GMAT questions are always specifically worded (since they're meant to test you on specific concepts). As such, you really have to pay careful attention to what you're told.
The phrase "X and Y differ by 4" means that one of the variables is 4 greater than the other. So we could have....
X - Y = 4
OR
Y - X = 4
With a phrase such as "Student X scored 4 more points than Student Y", then we KNOW that X > Y and we would have just one equation:
X = Y + 4

Hi,
Please refer to page 34 of the GMAT CLub math book (attached). It states that in such a case we must ALWAYS assume it to be x-y.
Is this incorrect?
