Hi thelalagirl,

To start, this initial CAT score is an outstanding performance (the average score on the Official GMAT hovers around 540-550 most years). You're clearly a strong critical thinker, so what you likely need now is to learn the proper Tactics and patterns that are built-in to the Test. With a Q44, you would have done well on most of the 'math' questions that you faced, but you missed out on lots of 'strategy-based' points.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you're looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) What is your goal score?
2) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Thanks for your response! I haven't studied at all yet, this practice test was my first exposure to the GMAT (but I did study for the LSAT a year ago, which would probably explain my verbal score). I am willing to buy any books that might be helpful to create a maximum increase in the shortest period of time for quant (though I prefer to not spend an exorbitant amount). I also will be studying while taking my normal law classes, so I don't have a lot of extra time, but I'm hoping to bring up Q as much as possible.

My goal score would be around a 740/750. I am a JD student at UCLA currently, so I am aiming to get into UCLA's dual degree JD/MBA program. However, I have no work experience so I'm trying to get my GMAT up as high as possible to increase my chances.

Hi thelalagirl,

Many MBA Programs expect applicants to have 2-3 years of quality Work Experience before those applicants apply. There certainly are exceptions to this rule though, so since you've named a specific Program that interests you, I suggest that you contact the Admissions Office and inquire about what they 'expect' out of their applicants (before you put a lot of effort into taking the GMAT now and end up having a 'hole' in your application that you can't fill).

As far as raising your Quant Scaled Score is concerned, 'book heavy' studies can often be problematic. Even the best books are limited in what they can teach you; they also can't force you to approach questions in a certain way and their explanations are often one-sided. As such, you might find it more beneficial to invest in some non-book resources that emphasize Quant Tactics.

Hi,

You hit a very high score in verbal! Then, all you need to focus on is quant until your exam. Although you hit 44, please note that mock tests scores tend to be higher than actual GMAT score and we don't recommend solely replying on mock test scores.

We think you can surely improve with studying Variable approach for DS in a short period of time. You can still cover PS with your own math skills though you can surely solve all DS questions 100% with the world's first Variable approach and have 10 minutes to spare.

You can go to our website and check if you like our method and try Trial Pack (4 hour lesson) that reveal our secret approaches of DS+PS core theory that you have never seen.

Additionally, below are two useful articles featured in GMAT Club for your reference. This will be helpful for you. You can see what sort of questions you might encounter on actual GMAT.
