Hi all,
I took the gmat on saturday and got a 740 (49q and 41v). My last gmat before this was on 2009 and I got a 710 with 51q. Now I am planning to apply for phd and the phd programs are looking for quant scores. My quant score disappointed me a bit. In all the practice tests I took, I got 51 q. Normally I can easily get a 51q. Do you recommend me retake the gmat?

Hi maliyeci,
First off, a 740/Q49 is an outstanding score (it's well above the 90th percentile overall), so you should apply to any Business Schools that interest you. As such, a retest is probably not necessary. You're ultimately asking Admissions questions though, so you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile. There's a Forum full of them here:

PhD Programs tend to be highly competitive, since there are so few spots, relative to the number of applicants. If a particular Program requires a Q51 for admission, then I would be surprised. However, you should be able to contact the individual Schools and ask.

I looked at the application requirements of Phd programs. Most top programs requires 90th percentile in both sections. 50 and 51 are the 90th percentile quant scores thus I thought that I need those scores. On the other hand a 50 or 51 is my normal score thus I thought that maybe I would retake and take that score. But on the third hand ( :D ) there is no guarantee that I can hit that 90th percentile verbal again
So it is not an easy question Thanks again.
