So, I have been studying for the GMATs for about three months. I’ve been mostly following the
Magoosh 6 month plan. Main study materials have been:
Magoosh, OG 2015,
Manhattan Prep books. I’d initially been planning to take the GMATs at the end of July. But I recently realized/decided that I have to take a couple classes this summer. I’m a career transitioner; I’m applying for masters in accounting in the fall, and I need to take some pre-reqs before applying and (hopefully!) show that I can handle accounting-specific coursework. So my grades in my summer classes actually matter, too. I’ve been starting to wonder if studying for the GMAT for three more months on top of all those classes is actually a good idea, and worry that I won’t have time to do both things well. I know I’ve read on here that 3 months is the average prep time, and some people recommend not doing much longer than that because you start to lose momentum or forget what you learned at the beginning of studying.
So, I’m kind of thinking of trying to take the GMATs in mid-May, to get them over with before my summer classes start. I figure I can still take them again in the end of July if I have to, if I don’t do well enough. But it would be great not to have to worry about the GMATs on top of everything else this summer if I don’t have to. Ideally, I’d like to score 750+, but honestly, “just” breaking 700 would be fine for the programs I want to apply for. I took one of the GMAT Prep CATs earlier this month and scored a 750 (V45/Q48), but I’m still half convinced that it was a fluke, I just had a good day, didn’t get asked questions on the stuff I didn’t know. Still, getting that 750 even once, even half not believing it, is what started me thinking maybe I could just take the GMATs sooner and do well enough. Yesterday, I got a 710 (V40/Q48) on a Veritas Prep CAT.
Also sort of a factor… I live somewhere a bit rural, so it actually is somewhat of an ordeal for me to get myself to a GMAT testing center. I doubt I’d be able to do it while my summer classes are in session. So mid-May and late July or early August are sort of my two windows for taking the exam.
So I guess I’d like people to convince me that this is not a terribly rash plan/horrible idea, moving up my GMAT-taking timeline. Or that it is?
