Hi ppl...

My question is ..if someone is scoring around 40-43 in the Quant Section...
will he/she encounter Probability questions ??? if yes...are they easy/medium or hard ????????

That is difficult to answer. However, I did get one probability question on my test (and I was consistently getting 45+ scores). If your basics are clear, I don't think the probability questions would be difficult to tackle.

If you think probability is difficult, try doing all the related questions from all OGs Kaplan Princtons etc. Most of the questions will be a variant of questions found in those books.

First of all "do not fear probability questions", I think if you put in some efforts they are very easy to crack. Just do some practice, get basics clear & you should be happily facing probability!

Agree with vivek. Most probability questions can be solved if the number of possibilities are determined by permutations/combinations or brute force counting method.

I am not sure if ETS (well now UVE!) expects us to solve some complex probability probs in <2 min.

The second question on my last test was a simple combinations problem dealing with #`s of ways to select a 3 student committee out of 10 candidates. Seriously basic, and that was it for probability. The rest of the test mainly focused on inequalities and number properties, interspersed with algebra word problems. Not one Geometry question, which was rather surprising!

Probability isn't difficult at all if you solve a few practice problems and read the solutions of those that you didn't get right. Most questions have a basic pattern..once you start recognizing them, you are all set.

I was quite skeptical about probability a few weeks ago and now I am sincerely hoping to see a few questions in the actual test since it has become one of my strengths and I can solve most of the problems under a minute...go figure !

and wat about Perm & Comb....I got the basics...but when it comes to solving i get confused if its a perm or a comb problem :oops:

I think we tend to overprepare for perm or comb questions as people have suggested that they do not appear that often.

Have you read the stickies in the math forum on Perm/Comb?

There are really only two or three concepts to remember for GMAT probability. They are explained extremely well in the Princeton book.

Thought this might be interesting: I took up learning poker right before I started hard GMAT prep. In doing this and calculating expected value all the time, in-the-head-real-time during games, I found the probability problems became a cinch! :-D Real application is indeed the best practice. Not saying you should play poker over studying for GMAT, however!!! :wink:
