Most don't have a limit, but it's best not to keep taking it if you're not doing something significant to GREATLY improve your scores in between takes. What's your score and prep history?

Remember the schools will see the last three times you took the test.

It's purely subjective how they would regard it, but at a top school it could be a tie-breaker.

Not anymore. Since PVue took over, their new scoring sheet lists ALL attempts within the past five years.

Additionally, the information about Haas only allowing two attempts is incorrect. Haas considers only your highest score (like most schools do) but wants to know how many times you have taken the test. It is a given that most top candidates take the GMAT 2-3 times, and some even 4-5 times.

I don't think you should really worry about number of attempts, but one has to cover it nicely in the stories or interviews. Recently, I read arsene's post, he got into Wharton after 3 or 4 attempts.

I don't know about Haas but Anderson (UCLA) has/had unique policy ;) After 2 attempts, they start taking your average GMAT score of all attempts :? (Disclaimer: I had read this last year sometime, not sure about today's policy)
