Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask you guys about your different experiences in scoring in mock tests of Veritas vs official mocks. I unlocked the 7 CATS from veritas and have been scoring an average of 660, with 46Q and 35V in 6 tests. My city is in lockdown, so I dont want to go to the offical mocks until I am ready for a 700 because I dont want to do them and then not be able to take the test.

The big question is: what differences have you found between your Veritas score vs your official mocks or GMAT? I’ve heard that Veritas normally scores you lower which would be very encouraging to hear.

Official mocks are generally easier than veritas. Sums which comes in actual test are tougher than what is given in official mocks. Also veritas tests are tougher than official mocks. But your real journey starts here because taking your from 660 to 710 is tougher than taking your score from 600 to 660.

If you are intending to get all 6 Official Mocks, maybe taking 1 to see where you are at wouldn't be so bad.

Hi Pat93,

Are you at a place in your prep where you really are only taking practice exams? Or do you have more quant and verbal studying left to be completed?

Hi pat93,

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. Since that algorithm is proprietary, no GMAT company has an exact match for it, thus CAT scores can vary a bit based on the 'biases' involved in their respective designs. The most realistic CATs available are the 6 from GMAC (the 2 free CATs, and each of the 2 that come with Exam Pack 1 and Exam Pack 2), but retaking a CAT that you've already taken is NOT a realistic way to assess your skills - since you will likely see some 'repeat' questions that you have already faced. Unfortunately, seeing even a couple of repeats can 'throw off' the Scoring Algorithm and impact your pacing, energy levels, fatigue, etc. (meaning that they would likely all appear to be better than they actually are). Thankfully, the CATs from Kaplan, MGMAT and Veritas are all 'close enough' to the real thing that they will provide you with a relatively realistic score assessment (assuming that you correctly take the CAT in a realistic fashion).

Beyond that, there are a variety of factors that can influence your performance on a CAT, including the time of day that you begin the Test, how well-rested you are, the testing environment, potential distractions, etc. This is all meant to say that you have to consider more than just the "brand" of CAT that you're using when analyzing your results.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?
