Hello, Sanjana,

First of all, welcome to the GMAT club, and best luck for your preparations. GMAT is not as easy as we assume. GMAT math is logic, and GMAT verbal is a real test of English as a language. So, we recommend you to look for reliable resources.

We will first recommend you to appear for a free diagnostic test on https://www.mathrevolution.com. Also, check our free trial pack and free-video lesson.

Your diagnostic score will clarify what plan you should adopt to beat the GMAT. An initial mock rating will help to understand your concept knowledge of both the sections. Considering your target score as 700, remember various possible combinations to achieve a score of 700 or above: V37/Q50, V39/Q49, V43/Q45.

So, we have indirectly answered your question. We would suggest preparing both sections simultaneously as it will give you the confidence to take as many as mock tests possible. You will also be able to judge yourself on various skills and have enough time to strengthen the topic(s) in which you require more time. Follow below-mentioned plan 1 and plan 2 :

Plan 1: Basic concept building --- try 600 level question--- take mock test ---- learn alternative methods and shortcuts ---- try 700+ level question --- take mock tests.
For verbal– Revise your grammar basics by GMAT grammar book or Aristotle grail for sentence correction. For RC and CR, try solving the 700+ level question.

For math, yes, basics are musts. You should visit our website https://www.mathrevolution.com to check our free trial lessons and free videos.

To strengthen the basic concept on various topics like arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and word problems, you should opt for a 5-hour Math Review lesson. Solve as many questions as you can relate to different topics.

Plan 2: Once your basics are strong, we recommend learning quick and alternative approaches to solve questions to save you the time. Q 51 shortcut will help you do so.

Keep checking your performance by taking mock tests. Connect with us anytime with your queries.

Hi everyone,

Will it be better to prepare for quants for a month and then verbal for a month or prepare for both simultaneously?

Hi Sanjana,

Good to see that you started seeking advices during your initial stages of preparation. This will save you a lot of time and effort. Many students start their preparation without any study plan and later realize that they need to follow a proper study plan to learn things effectively. So, let me help you out here.

Ideally, I would require a few more details to suggest you a proper plan. Because I strongly believe that a plan has to be made personalized with respect to the student’s requirements. Because as most of the students are working professionals, a study plan which would require a student who can dedicate 5 hours a day will not be suitable for a student who can dedicate only 3 hours. So, I would need you to answer the following questions.

  • How many hours can you dedicate for studies in a week?
  • When are you planning to take the test?
  • Which resources are you using for preparation?

Answers to these questions will help me guide you in a better way. Having said that, no matter how many hours you dedicate, you need to make sure to follow a few steps while studying.

  • Deal with one topic at a time
  • Learn the concepts of that topic
  • Learn the right methodology to solve questions of the topic (Most important step)
  • Take sectional quizzes of questions of the topic and use the methodology learnt to solve questions
  • Move to next topic only if you get at least easy-medium questions right
  • If the accuracy is less than 60%, identify what’s holding you back, work on them and master the topic
  • Once you move to the next topic, make sure to practice at least 5 questions of the previously finished topics every day.

This will help you learn concepts in an organized way and also help you get hold of topics learnt even when you move to other topics. The above steps are common for every student but I would strongly recommend you to follow a personalized study plan so that it is suitable for you and helps you learn things based on your comfort level.

So, make sure to provide me with the answers for the questions above. You can write back to me here or a better way would be to connect over a call and discuss things quickly. You can schedule a free consultation call using the below link.
