Hello Gmat Club,
I am a 21 year old Junior in college who has recently taken the gmat after about 4 months of INTENSE preparation. I am planning on pursuing my MBA in about 3 -5 years (obviously before my GMAT expires and a period in which I can amass some great work experience ). Why kind of early? I had a amazing internship lined up with a high-end investment bank in NYC that COVID ultimately forced the firm to cancel. I was devastated to say the least, but I delegated my time wisely and decided to take the study and take the GMAT as I would not want to have to get back into study mode years into working. Walking into the test I was scoring 700-740 on practice tests consistently. Mind you, this score came up from a 420 that I scored as my baseline before studying. As I walked into the testing center I was really thrown off guard when the forced my to wear a mask during the test, and the mask I was wearing.....thick cloth. It became hard to breathe at some points, I was nervous, feeling nauseous and had my focus broken multiple times. In quant I ran out of time and had to guess the last 7! And in verbal I had to guess the last 3! I ultimately pulled a 650 Q 41 (usually got a Q 46 or 47 and a V 38 usually pulled a V 40-43). I was very disappointed and upset although proud of where I had come from and currently DETERMINED to achieve my score and not give up. It’s hard to think of what more I could of done to prepare, I studied 6-12 hours nearly everyday.I gave it my all. So now, I think it’s time I need to re-evaluate my studying process and that brings me here! Any ideas brilliant gmatclub members? I want to thank anyone that has gotten this far in reading and appreciate your advice so much. Looking forward to hearing from you all.
Study plan:
Strong armed it and just read so many books and did so many problems thousands upon thousands. Over 1000 hours studying easily. Learned from mistakes but was note Diligent in working on error logs and tracking errors.
Also, I am happy to share my ESR with anyone interested and am interested to hear if you guys think I can still do this despite the amount of time I put in and didn’t pull my score. Thank you.
Posted from my mobile deviceHey flapjack,
First of all, congrats for a significant improvement from 420 to 650. I think you have much inspiration to draw from your own story. But to improve your score from 650 to beyond 700, you need to carefully evaluate what went wrong and work on minute things. Let me help you out here.
Before suggesting you the further plan, I would need you to answer a few questions. Because without knowing the details, it would be pre-mature to suggest you anything. So my questions are:
- Were the mocks you took the official ones?
- If yes, did you follow a standard approach to solve questions for every mock or did it change randomly?
I emphasize so much on using the right methodology because
GMAT is the test of application of concepts rather than just the concepts. No matter how good your conceptual knowledge is, if you do not use the right methodology to solve questions, you will eventually end up scoring less. So, looking at your post, I feel that you must have concentrated more on practicing questions instead of focusing on the methodology. This time it is really important to
learn the right methodology and use the same while practicing questions. And an ESR would be definitely helpful to get more insights. I can help you in analyzing that and thereby help you plan your studies accordingly. Instead of uploading it here, my suggestion would be to
connect over a zoom conference call and discuss the same. That way it would be easy for both us to sort things out and narrow down what actually went wrong in the test. So, if you are interested, you can
