I just scored a 700 on the GMAT (Q47, V40) and was wondering if I should retake to try to improve my score. I spent a lot of time studying and feel as though my score improvement would be marginal should I retake (710 or 720 at the absolute max).

A little bit more about my profile:
- Majored in finance at a top 25 public university and finished with a 3.92 cumulative GPA
- Decent work experience at F500 bank working in operations (no promotions to date, potential for one prior to enrollment)
- Letters of rec/essays should be relatively strong, but I am somewhat lacking in the extracurricular department

Post-MBA goal is IB or Corp Dev and I'm looking at Cornell, Fuqua and McCombs and then probably a few safeties

Is my profile strong enough where I do not need to re-take or should I seriously consider it? The alternative would be to focus a lot more time and energy on beefing up my extracurricular involvement to improve that aspect of my application.

Hi afr14004,

To begin with your profile evaluation, I’d say you definitely have a well-groomed profile with just minor hiccups here and there. Most importantly, your GMAT score of 700 and your GPA of 3.92 both are on the higher end of the graph which showcases your academic prowess and hence allows you to target most of the top-notch B-schools. You need not worry about your GMAT since it is your work experience which is given more emphasis on the simple fact that MBA is designed for professionals. Moreover, GMAT just holds 20%of an impact on your chances of acceptance, so a meagre change of 10-20 points is not going to shoot up chances of acceptance.

Coming to your work experience, you have mentioned that you have been working in a Fortune 500 company which adds a good brand value to your profile. That said, you need to also take into consideration your total years of experience on the professional front since it is imperative that you hold at least 3-4 years of work experience for an MBA degree. In addition to this, you also need to highlight the intensity and quality of your work experience by highlighting the kind of projects you spearheaded, the impacts you created, and your major takeaways. Moreover, if you have held any managerial positions in your past do highlight that as well in order to showcase relevancy in your profile since an MBA is basically a managerial degree.

Moving on to the extracurriculars, you have not given any information regarding the same which is equally important as it helps showcase a holistically developed profile which is what the schools are looking for. To give you a brief outline of how to go about this, you can maybe take up a few volunteering activities to show your social skills and certifications to highlight your constant drive to upskill yourself. This way you will be able to present yourself in the light which hints towards your potential as a future leader in your respective field.

Speaking of the schools that you are targeting, Cornell falls under the dream category (where you have a 40-50% chances of acceptance) and it requires at least 3 years of work experience while Fuqua and McCombs fall under the Competitive category (where you have a 50-60% chance of acceptance).

All things considered, you definitely need to pitch in a well-groomed profile which can be achieved through your application (comprising your resume, LORs, and Essays) as it helps differentiate you from the other applicants by highlighting your strengths and overshadowing your weaknesses such as your low volume of extracurriculars activities. Additionally, it also carries a 30% impact on your admission prospects which is why I would urge you to pay more attention to the same.

That said, if you are on the fence on how to draft an impactful application, you can check out our All-in-one service which is a complete end to end consulting process aimed at providing personalized application suggestions, unlimited edits, and expert consultants who would constantly be there to help you throughout your application journey! This end-to-end consulting service also encompasses assistance for scholarship essays, loans, visas, and most importantly the interview preparation.

We have helped 3500+ applicants get into the top B-schools with a 95% success rate. So what are you waiting for? Just click on the link below to find out how you could boost your chances of acceptance by at least 3X!
