Hello, I scored a 250 after an initial prep of 15 days and is quite disappointing to witness such a score. Are there really cases where people have scored from 250 to 650-700. Please help and suggest me good coaching institutes to get myself enrolled.

Hi Aishwarya,

I'm not sure if you scored 250 on the actual test or the mock. But, 15 days of prep is not too less to prepare for GMAT. I'm assuming that you are beginner and have just started with the process. Let me help you with the right way to go about it.

The right way to prepare for GMAT:

Deal with one topic at a time. Start studying the concepts and the methodology of a topic. Only after you are done with these two, you have to move to practicing questions of that topic. GMAT is not a typical test in which just the conceptual knowledge is tested. It tests your application skills along with the conceptual knowledge. So, without learning the right methodology to solve questions, no matter how many questions you practice, your score will most likely remain stagnant. Make sure to focus more on the methodology during your preparation.

You can go through the articles below to understand the right way to prepare for GMAT.

How to start your GMAT Preparation?

How to effectively plan your studies for GMAT?

How to score 700+ on GMAT

How to choose the right course?

I would suggest you to choose a resource which can help you with:

  • Concepts
  • Methodology (Most important)
  • Standard questions
  • Their detailed solutions
  • Study plan

Choose a course which can provide you a study plan as well. This way, you don't have to worry about what to study on any given day. The best thing to do would be to check out the free trials of the online courses out there and choose the one which suits you the most. But make sure you choose the one which can help you with the above factors. You can check out the below article to know more about the factors to consider while evaluating an online course.

Key factors to consider while evaluating an online course

And I would suggest you to check out the free trial of GMATWhiz before taking a decision. It is an application driven course which provides you with a personalized study plan which is integrated with the course.

If you wish to have a detailed discussion regarding the study strategy and want to know more about the course, we can get in touch over a call and discuss the same. You can use the below link to schedule a call with me.

Hi AishwaryaMishra31,

Regarding prep courses, in addition to seeking advice in this thread, take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant and verbal courses, and also read through some GMAT success stories to see what materials have worked well for other test-takers.

You also may find it helpful to read this article about how to score a 700+ on the GMAT.

Good luck!

Hey AishwaryaMishra31

We totally understand. But the good news, there are many students who start with the similar score like that of yours but with systematic prep have witnessed significant improvement in the score. I would advice you to start working on the fundamentals both in Math and Verbal. If you are committed to get a good score, then we are pretty confident that with proper guidance you will be able to hit your target score. Don’t lose hope

Hi AishwaryaMishra31,

Many Test Takers are unhappy with their initial practice scores, but you really shouldn't be. That 250 is just a measure of your skills right now - and you'll improve on that result over time as you learn more about the content, Tactics and little 'secrets' of the Exam. A Score-improvement from 250 to 650+ will take a great deal of work - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How many hours did you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) Were you able to answer all of the questions on this CAT/mock or did you leave any questions unanswered? Were you low on time and did you have to rush to finish any of the sections (and if you did, then how many questions did you have to 'rush' through at the end?)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hi AishwaryaMishra31,

15 days prep is definitely not sufficient. You need to invest a lot more to score well on GMAT. As you have just begun your prep, choose a resource which can help you with the concepts and the methodology. Stick to one good resource instead of juggling across multiple resources. You can try the free trials of the online courses and choose the one which suits you the most. I personally used GMATWhiz and improved my score from 570 to 720. So, I would suggest you to go with that. All the best!

Don’t take Princeton. Their instructors are hit and miss and also the fundamental background of their strategies tend to over emphasize tricks rather than focusing on Hardwork and improvement. If you look at their books, it’s all about how to not learn the material and use a shortcut to answer a question. It sounds enticing but here’s the Spoiler - The tricks don’t really work outside of the classroom... if you are going to take a top shelf class, might as well use the gold standard of GMAT prep which is Manhattan. Veritas is a close second by the way. You can check the reviews though I am sure you found them already...
