Hi everyone!
Very new to the forum.
1. Just wondering if you are thinking about taking the GMAT but actually want to try out the level you are at currently (in an accurate way, not 5 example questions online), how would you go about doing that(preferably for free)?
2. If you aim for 700+. Getting let's say 550 without prep and you have 6-8 months of prep ahead, would getting 700 be a realistic goal, or do people usually only raise their points with 50-100 in 6-8 months?

Hello, FrozenPizza28. The only way I know of to get a clear idea of where you would likely stand if you were to sit for the exam right now is by taking a mock test. You can take the first two official mocks for free through mba.com. I would recommend taking only one, though, so you will have the other waiting for you once you have begun your preparation. There are plenty of third-party mocks out there—e.g., those by Experts' Global, Manhattan Prep, or Veritas Prep—but nothing beats working with official material for predictive purposes.
To answer your second question, a 550 raw would be a pretty high starting point. With a disciplined approach and high-quality materials, you could probably reach into the 600s in no time. A 700 would certainly not be out of reach over the course of a few months, even 3-6. However, you may be assuming too much when your current level could be a sub-400. (I have seen it happen.)
You may want to check out the Study Plan outlined by GMAT Club founder bb for guidance.

I think Andrew gave some good advice.
I would also add that you don’t want to study more than six months and my suggestion would be to only plan to study for three months. My study plan mentions it but basically this is because of memory issues. People easily forget things in the most ideal time is to take your test 3 to 4 months after you have started studying. So plan accordingly
PS. You can easily take GMAT prep to get a sense of your score. It’ll give you a pretty accurate estimate. Many people improve about 100 points after studying for three months. Some go as high as 150 and if you put substantial effort was studying for the most important test in your life, you can get 200 points of improvement. It’ll give you a pretty accurate estimate.
