Had a less than ideal 1st GMAT? Seriously consider getting your ESR even if it feels like a marketing tool (or buying 2 mocks to see the results) . Even if it feels like you know what happened during the actual exam.tl:dr: Careful with how you
feel an exam went. An ESR may show something quite different. If you gave the gmat online, consider buying and doing some Official Mocks to see how you performed with various question types/sections.
Many times when you've given a test in the past, a teacher will return your answer sheet with how they've graded each of your answers. Perhaps with comments here and there providing further insight. "Didn't give the correct dates" "Mixed up the names of the leaders involved". We take this feedback for granted and never actively realize how valuable it is. Probably fair to say if a teacher gives you a low grade because you provided the wrong dates, you'll be more likely to memorize them correctly the next time, for example.
On the GMAT, sometimes people may feel they performed poorly because of X but in actuality did so because of Y.
To illustrate, roughly 2 hours ago, I just had a student I'll be working with and who has a mid 30V score send over an ESR I suggested they purchase. If a student was targeting a V40+ you may think "Spend another $30? I got in the mid V30s and clearly need help everywhere to get into the V40s. I feel I was running out of time during the exam."
Here's a small anecdote to keep in mind...
The ESR I saw showed nearly 90th percentile scores in two sections and less than 10 percent in the third. More surprising is that the student "didn't realize I was so bad" at that section.
Careful with how you feel an exam went.
