Hi,

I need some help. I feel I am stuck.

I had started my preparation for gmat in around October.

Beginning with manhatten guides , then enrolled for TTP course, which actually helped alot in both quant and verbal.

But my problem is I am very slow at solving questions especially verbal. I am quite slow in reading and understanding.

When I used to solve questions while practicing, it was just for learning , so not bothered much that time, but now it's become a issue. Recently I gave one GMAC mock in which I couldn't finish around 15 questions in verbal.

I really don't know what to do although I started reading more.

I really need suggestions.

Thanks

Hi Bniwedita,

Let me share my 2 cents from my experience of scoring 740 on GMAT and helping many students reach their target score. Taking extra time to solve questions is a symptom and not the disease itself. Let me elaborate.

There are 2 things that you do while solving questions - 1. You think about how to solve the question and 2. You solve the question. It's the first point that eats up unnecessary time. Now how do you tackle Point 1. Most people think the best solution is by solving additional questions. It does help but sadly is not the most effective solution because by just practising more questions you end repeating the same mistakes.

The better solution is to learn the right logical methods to solve questions and then master these methods with additional practice.

Also, developing a habit of reading and focusing on learning the right reading strategies should help.

Now before suggesting you the right methods, I would like to understand how you approach questions at present and then accordingly I can suggest you what's the way out. Feel free to connect with me on a DM to discuss further.

Thanks for your response.

My issue is with understanding the question. I take a lot of time to read and understand the passage and then ofcourse the answer choices especially in CR and RC.

Currently I take around five minutes to solve a question.

I guess it has to do with focus and reading habbit.

Don't know but I need to give more time on verbal.

Hi Niwedita,

Many GMATers find the Quant section, the Verbal section or both to be challenging – so you are not alone. It's worth noting that most GMAT questions are written so that they can be approached in more than one way, so it's possible that "your way" is the "long way" (and might leave you open to making certain types of mistakes).

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) Over the last several months, how many hours have you typically studied each week?
2) What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich
