Hey guys.
I just completed one of the free practice exams from the official GMAT website as a first step to identify the weaknesses I should focus on and I obtained an overall score of 690 with 20/31 on the quantitative part, 27/36 in verbal reasoning, and 8/12 in IR.
I will obviously be focusing on the quantitative part but I would like to know if it's normal to obtain scores as high as 690 in practice exams despite still missing a fair share of the questions?

Hi and welcome to GMAT Club.
The number of questions you answer correctly and your score is not very correlated on the GMAT due to the adaptive nature of the test.
You can see a part of the yesterday's YouTube video actually addressing it: https://youtu.be/INmDqeVjB04?t=1027 - how many questions can you miss and still get a pretty high score. We have also run a number of experiments with GMAT Prep (that is supposed to be using the same algorithm as the real test) and found quite a bit of deviation.
690 is an amazing score for the first practice test!
Just a note, nobody ever points how many questions they got right/wrong - instead you want to share your raw scores (between 6 and 51) so you likely had a Q47 and V39 or smth like that.

And to answer your question, explicitly, GMAT prep free tests are the best and most accurate predictor of your score. There’s still going to be a deviation for obvious reasons I’m not going to name but usually your scores will be within about 20 points with a number of people being within 40 points. However in some extreme cases people have reported greater deviations primarily due to fatigue and stress on the test. Some have taken a week of a break and took the test again to get a very consistent score. So for all purposes, your score is accurate.
The only reason for inaccuracy could be if you knew the questions or if you Google dancers or something silly like that
