Worth retaking GMAT for 740 vs 720?

Question

Not sure if this is the proper forum, please do help me out.

I took the test today and received a GMAT score of 720 (Q47 V42 IR8). I can’t say I am not happy, but what’s bugging me is that I was constantly getting Q49 in the official practice tests.

Somehow in the latter stages of the Quant section I ended up finding some real easy questions. I guess this is because I made some careless mistakes along the way. Pretty confident that I can take it to Q49 which would make my score a 740.

My question is, will it be worth the extra $$ plus 2 weeks of anxiety?

My target programs are LBS MFA and LSE Mfin.

Hi, I’m in a similar situation. Have a 730, with a 48 in quants and a 42 in verbal. I am going to take the test again since I know I can score higher, I’m not in a hurry, and I sort of enjoy the GMAT (if that’s possible 😉). In the end, it depends on one’s situation and goals. For finance oriented elite programs a q47 is a bit on the lower side, and if you were getting q49s, then it may make sense for you retake. You may write to the adcoms of the programs you mention to get a feel of what they expect in addition to the average ‘total’ gmat score of their incoming class.

If it will bug you and you are confident you can get a Q49, the question may be: why not give it another attempt. May be worth checking out the median/average GMAT score info of the programs you mentioned when making a decision.

Your 720 total score is likely high enough for those schools, and Q47 is certainly acceptable. At the same time, Q49 may be more in line with what those schools want to see. So, since you've been scoring at that level, it may make sense to retake to eliminate any question in your mind regarding whether your score is what it needs to be.

If you do decide to retake, you could ensure that you score Q49 by working through quant one topic at a time and doing high accuracy untimed practice and TTP Streaks Method practice as discussed in this post.

If you can get to 750, it’s a meaningful improvement in a competitive pool of applicants. You can take a look at the. WAMC tool to see the change for your profile and whether it is worth it.
