Hello my fellow GMAT warriors,
When I first started out preparing for the GMAT I was having some issues performing well on the Reading Comprehension section. However, after following the guidelines mentioned by TTP about how to go about the RC section, I have seen considerable improvement in my performance on this section. Therefore, I thought to share some of the tips I feel could be useful for those struggling to do well on Reading Comprehension because this section of the gmat can be tricky and time consuming sometimes. I think it is a good idea to practice by skimming and scanning the passage as you first have a look at the comprehension. Skimming can help you get an outline of the passage, the flow of ideas in a passage, and the author’s view on the topic. While scanning helps us in getting specific pieces of information from specific parts of the passage. So, by using this process of skimming and scanning, you will be able to answer the more general questions which ask about the entire passage and even the specific questions that focus on certain parts of the passage.
Read the passage thoroughly and in its entirety. There should be a purpose for reading the passage so read the passage to get the answer to what it conveys to you. What do you get to know about the topic? What was the takeaway from the reading of the passage? These questions can be answered only if you can deduce the author’s statements in the passage thoroughly. There may be several such statements in the passage, but who matters most to us is the Author of the passage and thus, reading the passage carefully is imperative.
Finding the main idea of the passage is the key to solving RC questions successfully. We should be able to answer the questions such as “what did the author want to convey about the topic to the reader?” and “What does the author want the reader to know?” We need to keep track of the structure of the passage and get to the main idea of the passage.
Finding wrong answers given in the answer choices and eliminating them is also very important to do well in RC. I used to have quite a lot of issues selecting closely related wrong answers instead of the correct answer but now with the help of various practice questions in the TTP course, I have been able to improve on this shortcoming. Ensure to keep an eye on use of deceptive language when the words may be the same as used in the passage, but the option does not answer the question and/or maybe it is in the paragraph that it should not be in. We need to be able to identify and to eliminate such answers. Furthermore, it is important to eliminate answers with extreme wording which assert more than what the passage says by using strong or superlative wording. Sometimes the question mentions options that contain outside information that use information not discussed in the passage which may be very appealing and look like the correct answer, but we need to eliminate those as well and look for options with relevant information within the scope of passage.
Moral of the story : Careful reading of the passage is a must.
Hopefully, the above-mentioned points will help you perform better in the GMAT Reading Comprehension questions as they have aided me to see a marked improvement in my RC section practice.
Good luck!
